The Art of Inspiration & Interpretation

This cutie "Heather & Her Birds" was inspired by a Fida painting by the talented folk artist Heather Galler.  The original piece is posted below.  Click on image for link to her website.

I wanted to start sharing the pieces that inspired me because I want to be clear that my intent is not to copy artists.   The birds, the greener, the flower in the hair...are clearly inspired by her piece.  But, you can obviously tell mine is my own interpretation of her piece.  I wish I was as creative as some people and most of my work does reflect my own style, but I am not a professional artist by any means and it helps me to be inspired by others.

What I want to say to the artists that inspire me:  Throughout history artist have been copying each others style.  That is where we get the greats like Neoclassical, Rococo, Nouveau etc.  If you are one of the artist that inspire others in a certain style, you should be flattered and maybe someday they will coin a style after you....You are an inspiration in the artworld, take pride in that.  If you feel that my art is a legitimate copy, and does not represent my own style, then please let me know.  You can find out more about copyright infringement on the government website. www.copyright.gov

I located an article explaining copyright laws for artist.  Being a photographer myself I, I make it a point to know the laws of copyright.  So, this article is very helpful .  Here is a quote : "if your painting is your own personal interpretation of a artist's techniques for achieving certain visual effects, and you use those techniques as inspiration for your ideas rather than copy them directly, you're probably in the clear--Keeping at a distance from copyright issues means that you interpret or are inspired by the techniques of other artists rather than are copying or imitating them directly. Artists have taken this moderate approach to "borrowing" or "appropriating" the techniques of other artists for centuries. In fact, pretty much every artist who has ever lived has created art has been inspired by the work of other artists. The question is how much and how directly you're inspired, and how extensively and obviously you borrow." (Alan Bramberger) continue reading here

A note from Heather about this piece:  I think it's lovely and you should do whatever makes you happy and not worry about me :)  I support you and your dreams we only live once.  thank you for considering my feelings ,I find it an honor to have moved you to create!   Heather
